Hello!

I am VERY much a newbie and I am quite amazed at how quickly and effortlessly I was able to update my system (Ubuntu, forget what version) problem is... I can't play my MP3's. I heard there are media players -Banshee and stuff -but I am VERY bad at installing from source (I'll practice, I promise) so I have been using apt-get. I only got swfdec for flash movies thus far but I would REALLY like a program like wine tools -if not wine tools -to play my windows games. Thanks everyone!

Ubuntu's forums have a wealth of information on getting mp3 support going. The gist of it is enabling the restricted (or maybe universal?) repositories in apt-get/synaptic. Then you can install the codecs needed for mp3 and other like things.

Not hello...

You would be better served if you edited the title of your thread to something more descriptive of your needs.

Seeing this is his first post and I presume an intro thread the title is good. I will tell him it is not good to ask questions for multiple subjects in one thread. It would be better to start a new thread with a new title to ask about the mp3 players.

ok firstly 2 questions and a title thats not much help but LQ is the right place to be make sure you bookmark it and read the tutorials etc .

the mp3 playing problem is a codec issue rather than go through it all here i have given you a link to a first rate download for ubuntu beginners and it will help you understand a lot now a few months bback in wh smith it was £9.99 so now its free its well worth getting

http://tuxradar.com/linuxstarterpack

ok wine the app for getting your windows games up and running in the top left of your d/top is a drop down applications click onit and go down to add remove its usually at the bottom
when the interface opens up in the top box type in wine heh presto tick the box and you are in buisness the interface your on has many programes that you can download and there are many games written for linux look around investigate

now to a minor telling off all people can read from your post is the title (hello) its best that you use that title for letting as many people as poss know what your problem is ie problems with wine on the home page there is a read me about posting questions

it is important for those that would like to help you if you can tell us your distro ie hardy heron or 9.04 jaunty and the kit your using a dell inspiron 1535 it means we know what were up against but usually without those things it would be difficult to give you good advise to solve your problems go to that link download that pdf its a damm good starting point

but most of all take your time and learn linux because as you do and there is a bit of a learning curve but as you become confident you will realise how much better linux is than windows
