LOL I get it now XD
...well in fact I got that word from here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touch_typing blame them XD
Quote:
Touch typing (also called touch type or touch keyboarding) is typing without using the sense of sight to find the keys. Specifically, a touch typist will know their location on the keyboard through muscle memory.
|
I never thought that word would make such a discussion about it LOL XD

Yeah I looked that up just to make sure I know what it meant before I posed my comment on that title, because them two words put together scream redundancy.

Touch Typist:
A typist that touches the keys in order to type letters that
when put in the right order spell words.

Hey it's pretty amazing to have a 21 year old person who uses "Home Row" on their keyboard
People my age walk up to me to have discussions and I turn my head but keep on typing, that always freaks them out; however it shouldn't, after all they have the same background as myself.
Welcome to the forums 842Mono. Glad you're enjoying Linux!

hehehe I can imagine I really love to touch-type. you can type in the dark. you can copy from something without looking at the keyboard. I mean the keyboard is made to be used that way! X')
...I'm sorry I sometimes reply very late, it's because I get tied up with exams and so on.
I might even put that as a signature hehe XD

I thought of a touch-typist, a typist using a touch-screen. LOL.
|
A touch typist is one who, er.. types by touch rather than the "hunt-and-peck" method I have to use, i.e. looking for the characters I need on the keyboard and pecking them out.
In the bad old days of typing pools, typists would type letters and documents from shorthand notes (For shorthand, Google Pitman's shorthand which looks like a load of dots and squiggly lines.) The typists would be reading the notes and "Touch typing", not looking at the keyboard, so typing by touch rather than sight.
Have you noticed that the "F" and "J" keys on your keyboard have raised dots or bars on them? They're the "home keys" used by touch typists to help position their hands on the keyboard. The "5" on the keypad is also identified for touch.
Play Bonny!

You want history ...
This starts and sort of comes full circle with present day touch keyboards. That whole concept of switching the keyboard from letters to numbers or other? Goes way back to original teletype, where unfortunately I go back to.
The original teletypes had the three main key rows and there were "letter" and "figure" buttons to swap between whether keys were ABC letters or "figures" being 01234 ... or %, &, $, and etc. And the old teletype systems required that you send a character at least once per second or faster in order to retain sync. Hence when starting on a circuit, people would hit typically the letters button a number of times to sync it up and then send their data, if they were live typing, as you know you pause from time to time when you're thinking and typing sometimes, so the machine would just pulse but not output anything, because the person on the other end was hitting the letters button repeatedly to hold sync.
A couple of years ago on a forum I noticed some guy had a signature that struck me as hilarious, but many did not understand it.
"I just want to say LTRS LTRS LTRS that there is only 1 FIGS FIGS FIGS way to get this done LTRS LTRS LTRS $! FIGS FIGS FIGS LTRS LTRS ops LTRS OOPS FIGS FIGS FIGS !"
Good old Model 28's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:T...R_Keyboard.png
That FIGS button REALLY hurt the left pinky!!!

Reading through this thread I was wondering what the "XD" thing was. (I'm old enough to know rtmistler's teletype!) OK so it's an emoji.
In case you haven't noticed it yet, there's a "Posting Rules" box beneath the "Quick Reply" box which has a few interesting links... You might like to check what's available.
I have to say that I really like your final one in the post above which to me looks a bit like Donald Trump! Perhaps a slight modification? 3:-o
