AceofSpades19 06-20-2007 08:38 PM

is it a java, or a flash game, need more info

ArcLinux 06-20-2007 09:32 PM

What is or are the games you are trying to install?

fatalblow 06-20-2007 09:36 PM

ummm i'm trying to install Gunbound have u heard of it???

Nylex 06-20-2007 11:44 PM

If this is it, then it's for Windows. You'll either need to use Windows, or run it under Linux with Wine/Cedega, as it won't run natively obviously.

Also, please use better thread titles in future.

fatalblow 06-21-2007 08:33 AM

   okk sooo what do i have to do install a wine thingy????

does it help install any online game??

can the game be for Microsoft and i can still download it with that wine thing?? and play it on Linux??

Nylex 06-21-2007 11:05 AM

Programs for Windows don't run under Linux natively (i.e. "by themselves", for want of a better phrase). Wine is a program that lets you run Windows programs under Linux. Cedega is like Wine, but specifically for games.

fatalblow 06-21-2007 12:30 PM

uhhhhhh I'm Cunfuzzledddd

Nylex 06-21-2007 01:01 PM

What don't you understand?

fatalblow 06-21-2007 01:16 PM

every thinggg ok i wen to that website for wine for gamess but it sayd i had 2 pay AND I AIINT PAYIN 4 SUMTHIN LIEK DAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! iznt there a free website for sumthin liek dat?

gregorian 06-21-2007 01:19 PM

Wine and Cedega are free softwares.

First link on Google for Wine: http://www.winehq.org/

enemorales 06-21-2007 01:19 PM

Man, is very simple. Windows and Linux are different operating systems. Would you put a PlayStation CD game in a XboX 360 console? You wou't, because you know they are not compatible.

Same for Windows applications and Linux applications, yet we have "wine" which is "kind of" an emulator that will allow you to run some Windows applications under Linux. Wine is free. How to install it depends on the Linux distribution you are using. Cedega is a special wine (commercial version) which works better and is oriented to games. I have not played with cedega, but I can imagine that if you buy the program it will come with some sort of installer.

As Nylex said, please in the future try to use more descriptive posts. The more information you give, the better (and faster) answers you will get.

AceofSpades19 06-21-2007 01:19 PM

first of all can you please spell properly, it would make it alot easier to understand you, and second go to http://wine-hq.com for wine

fatalblow 06-21-2007 01:28 PM

ok I am trying to install Gunbound onto my Computer. But everytime i finish installing it it says that i have No application suitable for automatic installation is available for handling this kind of file. I think Gunbound is a Flash game and so i downloaded a wine thing but it still said the same thing so so now i am lost and i need help trying to make it work

does this help????

moosedaddy 06-21-2007 02:01 PM

Gunbound is not a flash game. What you will need to do is install Wine or Cedega, then use the one you installed to install Gunbound.

I would try wine first, after you install wine you will need to run the Gunbound installer in wine. To do this open a console and type "wine gunbound.exe" or whatever the install file is called.

fatalblow 06-21-2007 02:22 PM

ok so I install wine.

Then when that's finished I install Gunbound into the wine thing??? is that right??

i'm jus makin sure that this is right............

fatalblow 06-21-2007 03:03 PM

Wine is cunfuzing me cause after it's done installing, i try and open it but it keeps saying Could not find a suitable application. This is like just after I try and open it

Quakeboy02 06-21-2007 03:20 PM

In general, right click on the exe file and select Open With Wine.

In the future, please use better subject titles than some variation of "Help me I'm a newbie". Those who get the most and best help in these forums don't use the word "help" in their subject, and limit it to a very terse description of the problem such as "can't install gunbound".

fatalblow 06-22-2007 06:02 PM

ok i'll change my post title next time,.... But Wine is really confusing me! and it's hard to understand (for me at least) so can you guys explain it again... but with a bit more detail???

AceofSpades19 06-22-2007 07:34 PM

just open nautilus or Konqueror and double click on the exe

What the F**K?!?!?

AceofSpades19 06-23-2007 01:32 AM

nautilus = file manager for gnome konqueror = file manager for KDE
exe = executable file aka program

fatalblow 06-23-2007 10:01 AM

............................... i'm soooooooooooo lost

Nylex 06-23-2007 10:04 AM

Read the documentation for Wine.

That would be a good start, also, How to type an understandable post would be a good follow up read.

Try this...

Open a terminal, type "wine" no quotes, then drag the exe file you downloaded, into the terminal window.

After you do this, it should look something like this..

wine "path/to/file/name.exe"

Make sure there is a space between the word wine and the first ".

If all that checks out, hit enter.

........ this wine thing isss reeaaalllyyyyy cunfusing!!!!

brianL 06-27-2007 05:56 PM

That dumb act is getting really tiresome.

Nylex 06-27-2007 11:37 PM

If you want help, you're going to have to be more specific really. Spelling properly wouldn't hurt either!

IndyGunFreak 06-28-2007 06:19 AM

Just so you'll stop posting and therefore my head will stop hurting trying to make sense of your posts..

http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iAppId=2939

I don't know what version you have, but all 3 versions are rated "Garbage", which means it doesn't work with Wine. So your only option is *probably* Cedega. Now I know you "AIINT PAYIN 4 SUMTHIN LIEK DAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and you're very confuzzled, so just to remove any doubt, the app doesn't appear to work w/ Crossover either(another commercial application), but its current version is untested.

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibi...ame?app_id=826

Sounds like you will either need to dual boot, or use Vmware.

fatalblow 07-02-2007 09:02 AM

wats dual booting?

Install two or more operating systems on the same computer....and choose which one to boot from a menu.

Also, you can install a "virtual machine" on one system (eg Linux), and then install other OSes (including Windows) in the virtual machine.

Search here at LQ--and on Google--for--e.g. "dual boot", "multi-boot", "virtual machine", and "virtualization"

I think this has alread been stated but: Some things will work in WINE and not in CrossOver Office--AND vice-versa.

lord-fu 07-02-2007 10:20 AM

Not sure, but the last time I tried to get a guest virtual machine to play games it did not work so well. The graphics were horrible(with vmware tools installed). May or may not work it's been awhile since I tried. And by the level of experience the OP is displaying I highly doubt they would be able to compile the application or it's needed patches in some cases.

AceofSpades19 07-02-2007 01:19 PM

there is no 3d-hardware acceleration in a vm :(, only vmware fusion can do that and its for macs only :(

seanh1986 07-03-2007 02:11 PM

Yeah, i was about to say you can't play games using virtual machines!

Why are you trying to run the game on linux anyways? why not just get a computer with windows and save yourself the hasstle?

Deviathan 07-03-2007 03:20 PM

I would opt for vmware if the game is non-3d, although it may be a bit more challenging to install for a new user. That's a bummer that it doesnt currently work with wine though.

Wine installation is really easy if you use the package manager that comes with your distro.

For example, I use Fedora Core 5 which uses yum. You could just do "yum install wine" at a command prompt and that would have taken care of it for you. I'm sure this is the case for distros that use apt-get.

fatalblow 07-10-2007 09:23 AM

ok ok ok i get it now :)
