Hebrew Character set in fedora core 2

is it possible to type in Hebrew in fedora ?
i can see hebrew in www sites and in file names on the hd
but i can type only in english,. can this be fixed ?

off topic:
---------------------------
and while i'm on the roll - how can fedora tell what character set does my files encoded in?
the story goes like this : i had a hd on winxp (ntfs) i converted it to fat32(==vfat ?) now my fedora displays everything right Hebrew,English, and Russian on the same file system how it that? isn't vfat a [what you call] single character set file system ? how can linux choose when to use russian encoding and when to use the hebrew one ?
