Smile HDIO get identity failed for dev/sdc1 invalid argument

Hello every one.
I had Ubuntu 11.x(?) 10 I believe, on a Samsung 120GB external hard plate and it ran well, then I didi an upgrade to 12.04 LTS an the same hard palte. I then recieved the following messege: HDIO get identity failed for dev/sdc1 invalid argument. I ran FSCK from Knoppix CD and was then able to come up with the log in maske, in which I was able to insert the proper user and password, after pressing the log in button the screen went blank for a short time then returned to the login maske. Of course you are probabley asking why I did the update, to keep up with the newest developments and to get the LTS function , from a stable Distrubition, is the answer.
I have checked the other simular posts with no results.
I use the External hard plate as SATA on a Medion duel processor, laptop.
Any assistance with this problem would be greatly appreciated.
