having trubble with my update manager, installer and terminal on ubuntu 7.10

hello

i have been trying to update my ubuntu 7.10 system after i re-installed ubuntu and i have got this error message every time i try and update or install new software ether with terminal or with the update manager or even the software installer:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

to me this means nothing to me so any help would be good

Try what it says to do. Open a terminal and type sudo dpkg --configure -a and see if that helps.
