Having trouble installing NDISwrapper (WUSB54GSC) hp Pavilion
 

Hello, this is my first experiance with Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy Heron) or Linux and this forum.

I am having trouble getting a linkSYS WUSB54GSC to run on Ubuntu. My machine is an hp Pavilion with an Intel Pentium 4. I found a thread on this forum from erat123, http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...solved-664463/

I think my trouble starts at the NDISwrapper. I have the .sys and .inf files from the windows driver. I followed the "Using Windows Wireless Drivers" under the Internet help section. There, it tells you to locate the ndisgtk from Administration>>Synaptic Package Manager. ndisgtk was not in the synaptic package manager.

It would great to get step by step instructions. If anyone has any ideas as to how I can get the NDISwrapper or the ndisgtk installed, please let me know as I am totally stumped.

Ndisgtk should be in the repositories, you can download it from here: http://linuxappfinder.com/package/ndisgtk. I would advise you try to find it in your repositories. Make sure you hit the reload button before searching. Use ndis as the search term and see what comes up.

ndisgtk should be in your repositories for Hardy. You're probably just missing some repositories you need to enable. I'm assuming you have internet access on the machine w/o the wireless working. If not, this might be more difficult. If you can get it online for just a minute, thats what I would do.

If/When the PC is online try this

Start Synaptic (System/Admin/Synaptic Package Manager)
Click Settings/Repositories

Make sure all the boxes on the first tab are checked. If you've been annoyed by being told to constantly insert the 8.04 disk when installing software, you can uncheck "CD Rom source" at the bottom.
Click the "Third Party Software" tab, and make sure all of those boxes are checked.
Click Close
Click Reload

Then search for ndisgtk and install. That should install ndiswrapper and its graphical front end. ndisgtk is not really required, as ndiswrapper can be configured from command line, but ndisgtk does make it a bit easier.

After you get it installed, it will be under System/Admin/Windows Wireless Drivers

Indy, thanks so much for the help. I'm not in the clear yet, unfortunately. When I select the windows driver .inf file, I'm told that it is an invalid driver.

Do you have any suggestions on this?

Unfortunately for that, I don't. I've always been pretty fortunate with my wireless devices, as they were either Intel or Atheros, and didn't require ndiswrapper. I'm curious, does your pavailion not have an internal wireless device, and thats why you have to use the usb device?

Just doing some googling however, it looks like there might be different versions of that same device. I've found references to version 2.0 and 4.0 (and I'd guess one could surmise there's a 3.0 somewhere). It *appears* one uses a Realtek driver, and one uses a Broadcom driver. I don't know if you've discovered this yet, but do you know which one you need? This could be the reason for your suffering, as those can both be difficult to get working under Ubuntu.

Unfortunately, beyond that, I can't help you much.

Either verify that the drivers you downloaded are not corrupt, or download them again, from another location if neccessary.

Well, I have it working now, sort of... The machine will run for a few minutes and then freeze up (expletive, expletive).

What I did was, for kicks, I threw in the installation cd for the wireless card. The .inf files and such were there. Then I typed in some codes on the command line, restarted (with the ethernet unplugged and the USB card in) and all was well. For a few minutes.
