Having real problems installing Firefox onto Mandrake 9
Hi, this is my first posting on what seems to be a very informative forum. I've tried searching the archives for info on this problem but seem to be just going round in circles.
Can anyone help with what must be a really stupid problem? I've just installed Mandrake 9 onto an old laptop - tried installing Ubuntu 7 but the installation just seemed to hang so ended up digging out my old Mandrake disks. Anyway, after about 6 hours of installation time the old beast finally rebooted into Linux :-) Chuffed to bits, I was. I noticed that Firefox didn't seem to be included in the supplied packages and I quite like Firefox from my XP days (see I'm already converted to Linux), so I downloaded the appropriate file from Mozilla web site. Now I'm stuck. I don't know what to do with it. I've tried following the instructions from a number of other postings. I've unpacked it, unwrapped it, untarred it, just about everything I can think of, but when I try and run the /firefox/firefox command I get this - "error while loading shared libraries: libfontconfig.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory". I've looked in the firefox directory and this file isn't there. Pretty obvious error message then, I thought. But why isn't this file there? Where do I get it from? Cheers, DustyDog |
The lib should be found in the fontconfig package or libfontconfig am not sure what the package will be on that version of mdk
