Having problems opening downloads with archive manager

Not only am I new to Linux, but I am not a computer person, so bear with me. I downloaded some Serif software, but when I try to open it, it sends me to the archive manager and says "An error occurred while loading the archive." My friend who put Ubuntu on my computer is out of town so I can't ask him. Anybody know what I can do? On second thought, perhaps the Serif software is not compatible with Ubuntu. I am trying to download some publishing, graphics, and web building software. Preferably for free, but will pay if I have to. Anybody have any leads on something compatible?

As EDDY1 pointed out, this behavior indicates that you are trying to run Windows software on a Linux system, which will not work.
You may want to try some Linux alternatives that can easily be installed using Ubuntu's Software Center:
- Desktop Publishing: Scribus
- Graphics: Gimp, Inkscape and many others
- Web building software: I don't really know, but possibly editors like Bluefish

Thank you guys so much. I didn't even know the softfware center was there. That makes it so much easier. The Scribus works! And your link was really helpful too EDDY. Do they have a category for people who are less than newbies? Like people who one day aspire to know as much as a newbie? That would be me. Thanks for being tolerant of silly questions, I really appreciate it. Made my day.
