having issues with the x server while trying to install ubuntu

ok so when i try to install ubuntu a screen comes up saying:

Failed to start the x server (your graphical interface) it is likely that it is not set up correctly. would you like to view the x server output to diagnose the problem?

after i view that, another screen comes up and says:

would you like to view the detailed x server output as well?

after that it disables the x server and says to restart GDM when it is configured correctly.

any ideas as to what i can do?
if any other information is needed just ask.

Generally any (or all) of the output it offers to give you would be helpful in letting people here help you.

Generic error messages won't do much to give us an idea as to what's going wrong.

Also, were you ever given the option to run:
Code:
Xorg -configure
That is generally advisable to make sure X runs properly, although to be fair, I'm generally used to installing Slackware and not ubunutu.

So it isn't even after installing ubuntu that you get the error, it's in the process of trying to install it. I was under the assumption that it was the former.

I'm not even sure what to do in this instance. Sorry.
