Haven't been able to sideload ebooks to an ereader

Granted this may be more of an ereader than Linux question but here goes.

I have a Sony PRS300 ereader. When I put two small ebooks (I have sideloaded them and added them via Calibre) on the ereader, the ereader somehow has 580 books on it. (290 full versions of each book.)

Anybody know what might be happening and how I can put ebooks on there normally?

Thanks.

That is truly strange. I use Calibre with my Sony T3 e-reader and have never experienced that issue.

What if you try to simply copy the e-books to your device without using Calibre? At least the Sony T3 mounts just as a regular removable device when I plug it in, so I can drag & drop directly to the built in memory card.

My advice is to try that approach first, to exclude anything happening with your version of Calibre. If the issue still persists, then we'll take it from there.

Best regards,
HMW

Hi,
Can you explain exactly how you tried to get the books onto your ereader. I don't know what "sideloaded" means. Were the books successfully loaded onto Calibre? Did you convert them to a format suitable for your ereader? Was your ereader mounted on Calibre? Did you use the "Send to Device" button on Calibre? Were there any error messages?

I too have never experienced that. When I connected my Sony to the USB port of my computer, I could browse the files that's on it. Is this how you are sideloading books? If I remember correctly (been awhile)there was a ./Ebooks folder, ./Pictures, ./Music, and a couple others. Simply copying ePubs or .PDF files into the ./Ebooks folder would have one copy of each file as a book on the ereader when I unplugged it from the USB connection.

Disclaimer: Neither did I, but apparently it simply means copying files to another device. You learn something new every day!

@HMW Thanks. you certainly do. So I don't "copy" a file from my usb stick to my computer; I "side-copy" it???? Never heard or seen that before. Call me old fashioned but I think I'll stick with "copy".

Thanks HMW. I have 1)copied (sideloaded) the books
2) added them with Calibre
3) put the books on the Desktop and then dragged and dropped them onto the ebook icon

The same result with all three.

Yes, books were successfully loaded on Calibre. Yes, epub for Sony, which if fine. Yes, ereader was ackknowledged by Calibre and yes, used "send to device" to send them. And no, no error message.

My flow is Media>Books. I have loaded books on there before and it's worked properly. Not any more.

And what version of Calibre are you using? It should be 2.35. Is that what you have?

Yes. 2.35. And today I found an article http://www.thinkivp.com/ebook-download-to-ereader about doing a two-step process of adding an epub via Calibre (1)Send to Device (2)Send to main memory.

And I did that. And I also noticed that Calibre put the epub in a new place:

Database>Media>books>the book's folder>the book's epub

But I still had 287 copies of the same book (that I added)

In another thread at Mobilread.com http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67398 some guys seemed to have a similar problem. I have two "collections" but they are just a single book each. I don't know if that would come into play or not.

Just a weird problem. Thanks for helping.

I got it working. The problem seemed to be that there were two "collections" that I could not delete from the PC. I don't know why there were hundreds of books. I have never had more than five books on this entire ereader at the same time. Anyway, from the Home page of the ereader I went to Settings>Advanced Settings>Format Internal Memory.

That cleared the ereader but it also cleared the Books folder. So I added a Books folder to Database>Media and then added an ebook to the Books folder. Worked fine.
