Have Slackware - need help to install nvidia 5200 driver

I believe I may have a video card issue. But I can not prove it.

Video Card: eGforce-FX 5200 Lite 128 M by eVGA.

When starting X, the display disapears. It has never worked. The Slackware install seemed to go pretty smooth. I believe it is running, I just can not see it.

I have tried RedHat 9, to no avail.
I think I have eliminated the monitor as the issue as i have swapped out monitors. I also have tried a Matrox Millenium video card, but the results are the same.

I do not know how to install a Linux driver for the video card. I downloaded something from NVidia, but it appears as a text file. Is that right?

I do not know Linux commands and such, but would appreciate any suggestions.

Have you looked here?

That link takes you to the nVidia site with the driver download and installation instructions. Its always worked for me to just follow them.

Post back again if you need some more help!

My GeForce4 is working perfectly under Slack 9.1

I used the generic NVidia X driver that are listed when you run in xf86config. I believe it was #549

I may be wrong, but I think I remember reading somewhere that the GeForce4 uses a different driver than other GeForce cards... so the driver you used for your GeForce4 may not work w/ the 5200... I have a 5200 and I got it working correctly by following the directions on the site I put in my last post...

The xf86config description said 'GeForce' so I tried it and it worked. You haven't got anything to lose by trying it (except for about 10mins).

I don't think ignorant can use the same module you are using arfon...

I think the GeForce4 uses a different module than the 5200...

I could very well be wrong though

I know nothing about the 5200 so, you are probably correct.

But for Ig's sake, I hope God helps the Ignorant
