Have Microchip MPLABX-v3.26 downloaded but cannot install
 

I have checked FAQs but could not find mention of the steps I have used to try to install this software, but UBUNTU seems to respond correctly.

Apologies for my non-tech language . . .

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS in a separate partition alongside Vista Home on my Toshiba A210.
MPLABX.v3.26-linux-installer.tar is in my Ubuntu Downloads folder.
I have double-clicked that file and, after a short extraction process shown on screen, a new window appears showing a file named MPLABX-v3.26-linux-installer.sh
I have double-clicked on that file and a new window opens named *MPLABX-v3.26-linux-installer.sh (~/.cache/.fr-5sDOcm) -
Could you please advise if my actions so far are bound to fail?

Because this what happens next . . .

The message in the new window says it is 'Loading MPLABX-v3.26-Linux-installer.sh from ~/.cache/.fr-5sDOcm'
That message, and the progress bar graph beneath it, is followed by script added by Microchip that seems to take an inordinately long time to process. The window spends most of its time in fade mode and the progress graph hardly moves after more than 30/45 minutes of run time, before the window disappears without leaving any departing advice. (The process is taking hours, so I have not been able to sit continuously watching the screen for clues on what's happening, or not.)

I did see a message flash up once in this last window which offered a choice to either fix a bug or ignore it, but it did not give me time to respond before disappearing.

Advice on the correct approach to get MPLABX.v3.26 installed will be much appreciated.

Just as an idea, have you tried contacting Microchip or posting in their forum? I think they might be in a better position to answer your question (although it's certainly possible someone here might be able to help you resolve this problem.) ;)

Is my method for installing MPLABX in Ubuntu correct?

I am initially seeking confirmation that my method for installing the software in Ubuntu is correct. (i.e. should double-clicking of the files as I described, have worked?)
If someone can advise with regard to my Ubuntu method, then I will know that the problem lies with the Microchip software and can follow up with them.

I ran the commands set out in

to resolve dependencies.
Both commands ran okay, but when I double-click on MPLABX-v3.26-linux-installer.sh generated when I double-click on MPLABX-v3.26-linux-installer.tar, the installation again fails.
I have also used the commands provided by Microchip to enable downloading of MPLABX-v3.26 to Linux, but the commands are not recognised.
I have also added the suffix --mode text to commands as suggested by Microchip, also without success.
I will now approach Microchip directly to try to sort out what's going wrong here.
Without advice to the contrary, I must assume my technique of double-clicking on downloaded and generated files in Ubuntu to get them to run is correct.

The file above, as the name implies, as an install script and needs to be executable. The first thing you need to check is whether it is set as executable which you can do by opening a terminal and changing to the Downloads directory: cd /home/user/Downloads (you need to replace user with your actual user name). After doing that run this to check to see if the file is set as executable: ls -l MPLABX-v3.26-linux-installer.sh You should see output similar to that below. Note there are several x's If you see that, it's some other problem.

I'm surprised that when you extract the .tar file you only see the install script. Usually there are multiple files and often a README or some text file with instructions. I don't use Ubuntu that often but my experience with some type of download which is not from their repositories will result in asking how you want to install after you double-click. The default I have see is to use the Software Manager. Good luck.

I guess there is something wrong with my istallation of Ubuntu?

The following cut is from my Is command (where 'myname' is my user name) and the system response:

myname@myname-Satellite-A210:~/Downloads$ Is -I MPLABX-v3.26-linux-installer.sh
Is: command not found

Since my last post I have run updates discovered by my system and subsequently re-tried the installation process provided by Microchip for MPLABX IDE, and have had some success. Hooray !
I will now follow up myself regarding the apparent inability of my system to recognise simple commands such as 'Is'.
