have lost sound output ubuntu 8.04 on compaq EvoN620c

i'm totally at a loss to understand why i have no sound o/p.
i have been trying to install drivers for my w200 wireless card
and along the way at some point lost sound.
when i try to open amarok for instance i get this error message,
error, could not launch application;
failed to execute child process /home/rob/.xine/config (permission denied). i am the only user and of course root. i reset everything to
default at boot. short of a complete reinstall i'm stuck.

Try this, cleaning up the /tmp dir and correcting permissions for your user:

sudo rm -rf /tmp/*
sudo chown -R rob.rob /home/rob

And reboot right after.

thanks for your suggestion. i tried it but it didn't work for me.

of course that meant i would have to try it different ways.

i have now reinstalled ubuntu. all i lost really were my bookmarks.

on the plus side i got rid of all the clutter that i added and didn't

really need.
