Have installed OpenOffice, can't find it to run it.

Complete Linux newbie here. I have just installed Fedora 10 and I downloaded and installed OpenOffice "OOO300_m15_native_packed-1_en-US.9379" as a package. It went through a GUI install window, said it was completed, now I can not find it.

I have looked in Applications, Office, (it just has AbiWord, Dictionary and Evolution Mail and Calendar) and I can not see it anywhere.

I also installed Flash Player but Firefox pages that require Flash still say the Plug-in is missing.

Any help would be great.

type in the console 'oowrite' or 'oo[tab][tab]' to find out.
or you can dig in the rpm file.

Another one of those software packages that keep changing the launch commands.

Whichever version of OpenOffice I'm using now uses:

/usr/bin/soffice to launch.

soffice -writer opens OpenOffice writer, soffice -calc, etc.

If you had installed open office with the add and remove software program it would be listed in the menus.

As for flash (just finished reading the rest of your post) libflashplayer.so should be in your .mozilla/plugins folder. If it's not, then find it (updatedb, as root, then $ locate libflashplayer.so), and either copy it or link to it from your .mozilla/plugins folder.

1. Openoffice by default is installed into your /opt directory, so if you went with a default install, check in there.

2. OpenOffice's "complete" response can be a lie. If you made sure during your installation of FC 10 that you unchecked the package install of OpenOffice, fine. Otherwise, you may find that you cannot find OOo3 because the existence of bits of OOo2.4 or earlier 3.0 versions prevented its installation. If you don't want to reinstall Fedora Core 10 with customization at install, then make sure that you remove all traces of prior OpenOffice installs, including the icon files, of which there are gazillions. Then you can install OpenOffice 3.0.1 (or 3.0.0).

3. Look in /opt first. Look for soffice, swriter, or scalc, files. If you can find those, that's where you are installed.

Ok, opened 'Add/Remove Software' typed 'OpenOffice' and [Find] and it finds a whole lot of language packs. Humm... :)

/opt appears to be completely empty

Found a solution. Ran "Add/Remove' searched for "OOo" and found "OpenOffice.org Quickstarter2" installed that and it had to install OpenOffice as well. Ha :D

Hi, I did a search for "libflashplayer.so" and it appears in the '.mozilla/plugins folder' ?????

Well, I'm not surprised - how, where, and why FF determines what plugins it finds and uses is a mystery for the ages. I once put a plugin under a rock in the neighbour's backyard, and FF found it no problem, yet the same plugin wouldn't work from .mozilla/plugins, which is where ff is *supposed* to first look for plugins (I'm reciting this from memory - I'm neither developer, nor expert programmer, so someone with more expertise could easily refute what I believe and put me in my proper place.)

However, a $ locate libflashplayer.so on my system finds it in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and /usr/local/lib/mozilla/plugins, so put it in those spots, as well, and see if that does the trick.

Thanks heaps everyone, I used the same trick as openoffice, used 'Add/Remove' to install some Flash therter pack 2 and it installed flash aswell.
