What kind of internet connection? eg Cable, DSL, dialup

Do you have a router?

Settings? eg static IP or DHCP?

"server not found" could mean that DNS is not set correctly. Open a terminal and enter:
ping 209.85.173.147
if that works, then try
ping www.google.com
If that fails, then dns is not set correctly. (In the example above, the numerical IP is for google)

In your main menu, click on System. In the pop-up menu, click on Administrator Setting. Enter the root password, then click on Network Devices. Select Network Card,

In the next screen that comes up, you should see your card identified in the upper screen, and information that looks like this:

Device Name: eth-eth0
Started automatically at boot
IP address assigned using DHCP

If you don't see that, you will have to configure the card manually. Click on the Configure button at the bottom, then try to configure the card. If you have problems, come back with error messages (verbatim if possible) you receive, the steps you tried to apply, etc.

In the long run, a lot of potential issues can be solved with a router. A lazy man's approach here might be to simply buy a router. Better yet, see if the ISP will provide a combination cable modem and router. This is what Verizon gave me (and its a wireless router to boot).
