Hardware questions

#1-I 've got a 82801 AA AC'97 soundcard-my sound is so-o-o-o choppy-is there anyway to fix this? Also, the volume is so loud, it could wake the dead-how to turn it down?

#2-In KOffice-especially KWord, when I print, it is one screwed up/jumbled-up mess-even print preview makes it look awful-all jumbled up...I have a Lexmark Z22 printer, that in StarOffice, everything looks fine when printed, so I figure the printer itself isn't the cause. Anyone care to take a guess?....

#3-I have a Zoom external (serial) modem-model 3049. In kppp, I entered all my info, did a modem query, everything looked fine, went to connect to my ISP, and everything was okay until it sent my script-based login. It just hangs up. I changed the timeout from 60 sec. to 90 sec, but this didn't help. There Tech Support hasn't been a lot of help either (their server apparently keeps going down according to the last email I got from them), and I can't seem to find anything that addresses this particular brand/model and problem category. Any suggestions on this?

#1) I had choppy sound when I played mp3 music and I found it to be that the mpg123 process wansn't getting enough CPU time. I have to launch it as root with a not so nice nice value of -19. It works fine now.

#2) Donno, Don't use a GUI

#3) Can you log in manually through minicom and then lauch pppd? I'd try that and see if it hangs up.
