hardware need to wireless internet hookup
 

I have a Compaq Armada Evo Notebook N600c series. I want to hook to the internet wireless. I don't know what the laptop has in it so could you advise me of what I need to do it? it does say "supports and optional USB-enabled wireless device such as a Bluetooth, 802.11 wireless lan, or PC Smart card reader module" (Whatever that means) can you please help?

There are two ways to get wireless working on linux; with a native linux driver (which is better) or using ndiswrapper, which uses the windows driver.

Native linux driver support is better for some wireless cards than others, so you might end up using ndiswrapper. You can get nearly all wireless cards working with ndiswrapper though.

What distro are you using?

( If its fedora, then you can use hwbrowser to find out what card you have. If you're using ubuntu, pclinuxos, mandrake, suse, etc. there will be easy ways of finding out this information too. )


I'm guessing from what you've said that that might mean that you don't actually have a wireless card in your laptop, but only that your laptop is capable of supporting an external wireless card you have bought yourself and have plugged into the USB port.

Anyway, post your distro and someone will advise you of what tools you can use to discover you hardware, and see what exactly is the case.
