Hardware List

Hi,

I'm getting bored with Red Hat 9 and want to try a different distro (not sure what, maybe SUSE, Ubuntu or Fedora). My laptop is a DELL Inspiron 4000.

Is there anywhere that lists what distros will play ball with my laptop rather than visting each site in turn and trawling thru each forum? I've googled and googled and know of the Linux on Laptops site but its outdated.

Thumbs up

Hi tharg,

I really must say that if you're running redhat 9 successfully on your laptop, any current version of the distro's you've mentioned should run splendidly. I'm biased towards debian and use kubuntu dapper on my laptop (inspiron 5150) so I would suggest that personally. You might try doing a search on ubuntuforums.org for inspiron 4000.

I haven't tryed other distros because SuSE 10.0 works like a charm and it was the first attempt. Everything works hust fine for me: wireless, bluetooth, suspend to ram and suspend to disk, usb system....

My next try will be the Novell Desktop which is based on SuSE 10.0. I read very good reports about it.

I am using SUSE 10.1 on my Acer-laptop (xp-dualboot) and I’m very pleased about it. I don’t think there is anything that xp can do what SUSE 10.1 can’t (Probably someone can tell me but I haven’t found them myself for what I need). You could give SUSE a try. SUSE is bit bloated so it can run a little slow. I’ve got another laptop (older. medion; PIII 600Mhz, 192ram, 5 gigs HD) and I tried PClinuxOS and Kubuntu(still running) and was please with both. I am going to try Mepis 6.0, I heard a lot of good things about this distro.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replys chaps!

Apparently the latest version of Ubuntu and Kubuntu are LIVE CDs so I'll see if they work. This is the way forward...now I can non-destructively see if hardware works with a distro.

BTW, I tried SUSE on the Inspiron 4000 before and it just hung. Mind you that was last year...

Mepis 6.0 is also a live cd. I am running it now and it has more standard software as Kubuntu (like firefox).

good luck!
