AMD Athlon X4 860K
Asus A88XM-E(Or A)
Corsair Vegeance 8GB DDR3 1866Mhz
EVGA 750TI SC 2GB
Evga 430W PSU

Yes. For motherboard you might have to check whether all peripherals are supported. These days linux almost supports popular motherboards.

Fedora would be good try.

And that's an important detail. Running Ubuntu live first will help give you an idea whether devices are supported such as audio, ethernet, wireless and bluetooth devices/chips, as examples. ;)

Orzeka,

I guess that you are planning a new build and therefore are unable to run a live Linux DVD to test component compatibility.

As mentioned above, Linux supports most major motherboards these days, so you are not taking much of a risk.

You would need to spend time searching for the manufacturer's information on which chipsets/drivers they use for ethernet, audio etc.

Is it worth it?

As an alternative to Asus, you could look at a similar Gigabyte board:

Items like CPUs and graphics cards are glamorous and exciting. A PSU is unglamorous and it is invariably the last item on a new build shopping list, when the budget is almost exhausted.
This often leads to a wrong choice of PSU based solely on cheapness.

A quality PSU should be the first item on the list.

Here are two 430W examples.

Corsair CX430M PSU:

SeaSonic 430W:

I am sure that you have already done your research on nvidia Linux drivers for your EVGA graphics card, similar to this:

You may need a decent CPU cooler, like this Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, to replace the OEM one on the AMD Athlon X4 860K, especially if you are considering overclocking:

Thanks for the replies, I have already actually bought everything. I was going to go with a different mobo but I didnt due to prices (I built this for $340 just need the case) As for the PSU, PCPartpicker.com calculated it needed ~200W so I got a 400W that matched the GPU. I didnt get an aftermarket cpu cooler as I donot think it will fit in my case (Antec ISK600). Also, what are you saying about the PSU, that it has to be compatible with linux? That wouldnt make sense...

Of course not.

I was pointing out the importance of buying a quality PSU for a new-build PC.

+1

Fully agree, this is one area you don't want to skimp on, trust me. I've seen one PSU with a couple bad caps take out (essentially destroyed) an entire system. :(

Corsair, Seasonic and PC Power & Cooling make some of the best PSU's out there, in my opinion. :)

There were a couple good lists that I had found in the past but can't find them now...
