Hardware acceleration : NVIDIA / ATI on Intel 845

Hi,

I am currently working on Slackware 10.0.
I am really confused on which drivers I will have to install to enable hardware acceleration on my system.

I have a P4 2.0A processor with 256 mb of RAM
and an Intel 845 motherboard ( so I guess my video card is Intel 845 )

I do not have any additional video card.

I know that hardware acceleration is not enabled on my system because when I start Quake III Arena it gives me a warning that :
I am using software MESA (no hardware acceleration)

I am however sure that my system is capable of supporting Quake as it ran fine in Windows XP and Fedora Core 1 (barring a few sound problems).

I even read "SBing's Slackware FAQ" posted in the Slackware forum and tried to install the nvidia/ati drivers
but both of them give me some "no such device" error, (though I am not sure).

Please help me as this issue has caused me a lot of trouble.

Thanks in anticipation.

You need to have an nVidia or ATI card for the above drivers to work. You have an Intel onboard device, do you not? Those drivers wont work.

What you need is to load the i830 and intel-agp modules. That may speed things up.

Thanks for the help

Yes I have an Intel onboard device.

I'll try searching for and loading the i830 and intel-agp modules.

Thanks again for the help

They're part of the stock kernel. If you don't already have them, you'll have to recompile.

Success at last. I downloaded the drivers for my motherboard from the Intel site and installed them.

Got quake III to work at last.

Thanks a lot for your help.

I am facing a few sound problems with quake though.

Here's a thread I have posted in the games forum regarding this :

Thanks again
