HardDrive Partiononing
 

I have a drive c: and a drive d: drive d: is my back up drive and is almost full and drive c: was formated a sec ago and i turned it from a 6+gb to a 3.24xgb and now i got 3gb free and i can't even use it...................

Need help I was planning on making 3 drive harddrive from 1 hardrive, a 3gb for windows, a 3gb for linux and 2gb for my back up drive.

Please help..

If I understand you correctly...

You have 1 physical hard drive of 8 gig total that was 6gig win and 2 gig data which were labled C: and D: in windows. You have now changed this to 3+3+2 which, if in windows would be C:, D:, and E:

You also seem to be having trouble with the 3 gig partition you just made (I'm guessing what would be D: in the second example.

You're kinda leaving alot for us to guess at here.

How did you repartition.
What do you mean by I can't use it.
I assume you want to install linux - what distro.
What partition do you want linux on.
Have you thought about the linux partition - what mount points do you want.

I will offer a suggestion based on what i think you want to do.

Partition your drive with partition magic so win is C: at 3 gig, data is D: at 2 gig, and the last 3 gigs make ext3 (if you don't have PM, use fdisk and leave it unformated). Install your linux distro to the last partition using the default partition scheme.

In the future, you need to provide more detail.

ok i wanted to have 3 drives but fdisk didn't let me......
I deleted the c: drive that was 6gb+ and turned it into 3gb........
drive c and d are my hardrive and drives e and f are my cd rom drives......

I wan to use Red Hat 9 and want to put it on drive c:

Can you fill me in on how to use Red Hat to partion my drive? Red Hat doesn't seem to give good explanations to NOOBS.

I'm not trying to be a pain here but you still arent answering enough of my questions for me to give you a reasonable answer to your problem.

Again, I'm assuming here...

You have a windows machine
It was 6 gig primary partition and a 2 gig extended partition.
You needed to keep the 2 gig partitionbecause it was your back up drive.
You deleted the primary partition that was 6 gigs and made it 3 gigs?

I could very easily be wrong here, but to do what you seem to have wanted to do, you would have to back up you data to another location, delete all the partitions on the drive, resize the primary to 3 gigs, create an extended of 5 gigs, create 2 logical drives of 2 and 3 gigs respectively in the extended partition.

Unless you use partitionmagic, you can't resize the extended partition from 2 to 5 gigs without redoing the drive - using fdisk that is.

Can you be more specific at all.

During the RH install it will ask if you want to use your entire partition, or just certain amounts. You need to specify what you want at that point. If you've got a seperate partition already created for this, you can tell RH to use that partition.

PionexUser me neither understand how you could be able to resize the 6g to 3g, using fdisk, and without destroying that 2g backup space.

I could also *ONLY* assume you use partition magic or equivalent tools. Ok then I *assume* you now have 6g blank and 2g with full backup files. all the following is based upon the above assumption:
I have not tried before but I remember someone has used partition magic to destroy the primary windows partition(suicide) and leave the first 6g "unrelocated". Then during RHLinux9 setup, you can choose "automatic partitioning" and go on.
Other choice is to backup the 2g files onto other harddisk, or burn it onto cd rom and use fdisk to *entirely* re-partition your harddisk.

Also, I think you might want to follow the instructions by MasterC. He is really good and not *only* a master on C :D:D:D
