Hard drive not showing up in pvs CentOS

I have a 4th hard drive in my centOS VM (virtual-box) no CDs or anything like that though

when I do a
ll /dev/ | grep sdd
it shows that it knows that sdd is there but when I do a
pvs or a pvdisplay
only /dev/sda - sdc show up

I was able to put a partition on sdd with fdisk. I assume that I am just missing some concept somewhere. Any idea what that might be?
