What are the best? It depends on what you're looking for? So what exactly do you want? Answer that and I'm sure you'll get plenty of suggestions. jdk |
Haven't used Ubuntu in years. But I think it has a similar Software Center to Linux Mint which I'm using. People rate programs there and review them as well. Easy to find the highest rated/most used software :)
And yes define best please. I mean there are so many different programs out there. For example my favourite program to listen to music with is Banshee. But others may prefer Rhythmbox, Amarok, Clementine etc. etc. :) |
Wow , i'm sorry , actually i've found a boat load of pre installed on here ,,,,i'm really new , i'm just up for a challenge. And with any luck this os wont try to own me like windows. I prefer to do what i want ,,, not what they say to do. Thanks for the couple answers , and i think i'll be quiet for a while and just read. (less chance of looking stupid} BTW thank you for the great welcome. looking to the future Doug

Don't let that hold you back. If you think you have the answer, pipe up, get in the mix, you'll learn more that way. If you have a question, just ask it, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. Everybody here started just like you. Everybody who's been around this stuff for a while who's still here is here to help new people because they were new once. I read this thing for years before I asked my first question, dumb mistake, should have been asking questions from the start, |
Welcome to the Linux community, my only advice is that when you come across your first 'problem' don't give up. Search google, ask the community just dont re-install windows. Its worth it in the end :)

When everything works great it gets boring. Problems are the fun part ;P

Hope this helps. Have fun! :hattip: |
Having a good attitude is 90 per cent of learning to use Linux.
10 percent is help from folks like us who are community friendly folks. Look at it this way. One you learn this. It is yours. No one can take that from you. It is a new skill in your life. Like learning Spanish. Good luck with it. |
One of the best references I have found for a explaining the Linux shell to a newbie is Mark G. Sobell's "A Practical Guide to Linux Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming"
I found it at my local library, of all places. |
