Hangs at boot - Debian 3.0r4
 

Hello, i'm trying to install Debian 3.0r4 but just after the bootprocess it stops (hangs?). At the boot promt i type "vanilla" and it starts just fine but at the line:

ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15

it stops...

Some of the lines before are:

hda: WDC WD800JB-00CRA1, ATA DISK drive
hdb: IBM-DTLA-307045, ATA DISK drive
hdc: IC35L120AVVA07-0, ATA DISK drive
hdd: _NEC DVD_RW ND-3500AG, ATAPI CDROM drive
hde: Maxtor 6B200M0, ATA DISK drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,03f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15 <------- LAST LINE

The Maxtor disk is SATA, can that be the problem? Or is it the DVD_RW? I also tryed unpluging all USB devices but with the same result. My mobo is ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe.

I've done a few installs of debian and when I used the boot CD, I either edited the settings to use the 2.6 kernel or I simply hit enter.

What does typing 'vanilla' do? and why do you need this? (sorry if this is a very lame question, but I'm kinda a noob also).

Also, I've heard SATA support can be funky especially with old distributions. You may want to use Debian Sarge, which is currently in the testing phase, but has all sorts of cool new features. I'm using it right now, and it seems to be pretty much debian with new packages.

You may also want to disconnect the sata disk and see if it makes a difference. Obviously this wont be a solution if you only want to install on the sata disk, but atleast we can isolate the problem.

I tryed to disconnect the sata and now it works! The problem is that i want to have dual boot and XP is on my sata disk (other disks are IDE). If i disconnect the sata while i install Debian i think it will be the same problem when i connect it again after the installation, or? Is there som workarounds so i can have my sata connected?

I didn't find a solution so i did as MaTrIx709 and installed Debian Sarge instead. Thanks for the tip, MaTrIx709!

1 = IDE HDD 12Gb <-- debian boot & root
2 = Sata 150gb
3 = Sata 120gb

what can i do ???
