hangs after logging in

I am having fc5( behind the times , i know;() Everything thing goes fine after i am logged in , but the blue screen(i dont know its tech name) which appears before the desktop appears stays even after the desktop appears and the top panel having system , preferences , apps sub menus doesnt appear. This happens quite frequently. anyone can help me out please?

Btw, it's called a splash screen. So it stays, and the top panel doesn't initialize. I think I saw something like that on a computer running with insufficient memory trying to use full whiz-bang graphics mode. It's not a mistake that the splash remains, it's supposed to stay until (sounds like Gnome) is done initializing. Your problem is why it doesn't finish initializing. I can't help you much more than that, but at least now you have a slightly better idea of the problem.
