Hang Up

I am running Ubuntu Linux 9.04 one one hard drive. I run Open Suse on another drive shared with Windows Vista and a Ubunutu 8.10 on yet another drive. I was trying to install Fedora 10 on my 32Gig Flash drive when I met a problem. Everytime I opt to boot from my Ubuntu Linux 9.04 all the start up sequence runs to the point where the booting lines start scrolling. Then a grey screen pops up. In the middle of this screen there is a box with choice of language. To the left there are four headers. indicating Language, Time Zone and Who are You ? To the far bottom right there appears an arrow "FORWARD">> indicator. I have reasons to believe that this could have been left over by the Fedora installer.

In the end Fedora did not install on my pendrive and now I could not access my Ubuntu 9.04. The files, Linux image, grub and all are still accessible by a file handler like Nautilus or any other. I am seeking opinions and assisstance, first to establish what that screen is, then to remove it. Incidentally after the grey screen appears everything, mouse, keyboard, function keys freeze up.

Any suggestions please. Thanks.

It seems that the Fedora installation managed to modify the Master Boot Record (MBR) or installation didn't finish properly or was aborted. You need to restore the MBR by using a Live CD for booting, I guess. Your case can be become extremely complicated, because you have two Linuxes and Windows next to each other. Maybe start out by restoring the MBR for Windows, and then proceed to update it to work with the two Linux installations.

In general: if you just want to test another Linux distro, rather have a first run within a virtual system like VMware.
