install an text editor, open a source file then just starting hacking (typing) what ever into it until you get it to do something other then what it was written to do.

Welcome.

If you are really new then pick a language and an editor and start hacking away. I'd recommend Geany or Kate as good beginner editors.

As for the language, the choice is mostly determined by what you want to do. For example, if you want to process a lot of text, then perl is probably your best choice. If you want to do a lot of distributed, real-time work then Erlang is probably your best choice.

What kind of programs do you want to write?
