half life server? Total Newbie Can't figure out bin files
I am a total newbie to linux. I mainly just want to learn linux and stuff and run a half life server. I downloaded hlds_l_3110.bin but for some reason I am unable to unpack it or whatever by clicking on it or by using sh in the terminal like one of the tutorials suggested. It says that it cant't open the bin file. I have tried redownloading it but it still does not work.

chmod +x hlds_l_3110.bin

be sure that u have write permission on the directory wherehlds_l_3110.bin is located.

thanks but I got another problem
That worked and I figured out the tar.gz thing. Now I have it installed but when I run it with the ./hlds_run it says the server died and keeps restarting it

Nevermind I got it.

Hey jenova. Here: If your behind a router or something, make sure you have the port your using forwarded, and also make sure you put the ip adress into the run command like so:

./hlds_run -game cstrike +ip may vary, just needs to be the servers local ip on the network) +map cs_assualt +maxplayers 16

That should work. You will get connected. Generally what happens is there is no 27015 open for the server to run its executions from.

i aint behind a router or anything like that i just a 1 computer setup with linux mandrake 9 and wann test the cs server i run the line and i get this message

auto-restarting server on crash
./hlds_run line 53 ./hlds no suck file or directory
server died

their was a line to add -debug to it
but i tired that and it does nothing i just keep getting that same msg

now what?????????????

Make sure that your in the correct directory when you run hlds_run. Thats about all I can suggest. Im in no way experienced with setting up these servers. Make sure your in the hlds folder when you run ./hlds_run from the command line. Thats all I can say. Make sure you have your directory and file names correct.
