HAL... the circle.
 

I trying to install vlc and it needs alot of dependences to run. I went through the list and finally came to hal. Hal needs libhal but libhal needs hal. I need help how are some error messages.

[root@localhost mario]# rpm -ivU libhal0-0.4.8-8mdk.i586.rpm

I'm lost and have no clue as to what to do.

it's not rocket surgery, just put both filenames on the same command line. ;)

LOL.... thank you very much and your right it isn't. also I remember from old version of linux (redhat 7.3) if you do exit then exit you end up as shell... I see now in the newer versions it don't work that way. How do i get to shell? I'm running mandrake 10.1.

Ok now i have a new problem. I got the installation going (thank you acid_kewpie) but now when i run vlc I get a error

so I did a vlc -v and this is what I got.

I did a google search and the websites I visited did not how the information I needed.

well these are not actually fatal errors, just staus messages that vlc is rpinting out for reference. it's load and ready to use... i'm not that familiar with vlc though, so can't give you any real usage notes.

alternativelly easyurpmi.zarb.org
you can then use drakrpm to download and install
all vlc and dependencies in 1 go

I did that for vlc (but with mandriva LE 2005)

I enjoyed when I started linux to do make install etc
and look for dependencies. Got lazy now

I kind of like to install stuff from tarballs more than rpms and so on but when i installed mandrake and for the first time used urpmi and urpmf I found it to be painless but I also found (iit might be me) but when I urpmi and urpmf a file or compressed file and let it install the program that I was working with that needs the program that I just installed isn't there or the program don't find it. lol, I'm lazy or I'm just to busy with other stuff in linux to find out the problem

way off topic, but did you know that HAL (space odyssey 2001) stands for IBM? Each letter in HAL is the letter that precedes the corresponding letter for IBM in the alphabet. H->I A->B L->M.

geek facts 101 huh? I watched that the night before last for the first time.. what a sack of crap. always be wary of films which "get better with age"

(I am not quoting, this is just a summary)
