hadware modem in mandrake 9.1
 

I have 3com (I'm sure of this) hardware modem, which can't for some reason be autodetected in the network config of mandrake 9.1. I considered using the 3com/US robotics linux install, which uses setserial (which i install), but it can't find it at ttyS2 (modem is at com3) or the modem symbolic link. kppp has the same problems to.

by hardware modem, do you mean, piece of hardware,
or non-winmodem.

is it pci?
do a cat /proc/pci to see if it shows up in linux, and
what irq it is using. you can do the setserial yourself

It's pci, and it should be at ttyS2 (it shows up as com3 under windows)

if you do a
cat /proc/pci
and don't see your modem there,
all this kppping and stuff isn't going to
do any good. that command will also
show what address and irq the device is at

It's been a while since I've used KPPP but did you try /dev/modem instead of ttyS?. I ran a USR External that identified as ttyS1 but would work with /dev/modem since it's a symlink the same as /dev/mouse.

something funny: I've looked into the setserial option of installing my modem, and ttyS2 and ttyS3 is not in /dev/. They usually appear in other distro's on my machine. How can you check what /dev/modem points to? And, therefore, how can you change what it does point to?

another question: is setserial a valid option? I have also tried installing slackware 9.0, and it doesn't recongize the modem either. It does have, however, /dev/ttyS*. Will setserial setup the appropriate links, or do the more user friendly distro's install it for you (i.e. Mandrake). The thing is, my modem works just fine in Red Hat 9.0 (but RH is bulky, slow, and M$'ish). Does it ever seem like there is never enough support for modems? Modem probs in linux have been harping me for the past year...AAAARRRGGGHHH!!!
