gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--format violated; tar: Unexpected EOF in archive

I am having a big headache. I archived one big directory using "tar -czvf" command last year, and then removed that directory to save disk space. Now I copied that xx.tgz file to other cluster using "scp". When I tried to restore the directory using "tar zxvf" command, however, I am getting the following error message in the early of decompression:

gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--format violated
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

Does anyone have similar experience before and is there a way to recover all the data?

Thank you.

Michael

Are you sure the file is actually compressed with gzip? What does file xx.tgz report?
