?????.gz, GUI and terminal

finally got the penguin......

mostly succesful.

mandrake 8.0
havn't quite figured out package management.

HOW DO I use gzip??

i have software to install, it is ????.tar.gz and ???.gz files, with a clamp icon.

I cannot do anything in gnome with them, but i get all sorts of results in KDE, such as clicking on gz, having a folder with a
cog icon, but upon clicking:
(open with
menu appears.

also, what exactly is sawfish used for, and what are each GUI's strong/weak points?

and what is the vertical hyphen that appears in my shell book, to use after a command eg.:
cat ????.txt I more

i cannot find the key that looks like that L in terminal.

For the tar.gz: pop up a terminal and tar -zxvf foo.tar.gz
There are plenty of threads around with discssions about WM's.
The vertical thing is the pipe symbol, basicly you tell the cat program to pipe it's output through the more program

where | is when you press shift+'\'
