gvim tweaking

I've been using gvim60 for my editor and I was wondering how I can set my colorscheme as the default.Reading the docs, near as I can tell, I need to put some script in my vimrc file.
If I do this (I can copy a script from the scheme I'call up) , will it mess up any of the features thats already running? I'm mainly interested in the color and font changes, and thought about just tring to "fiddle with them" but thought I oughta ask someone in the know first.
I know there is a mail list for , and I'm already on it. However I can only recieve mail, I haven't figgered out how to get past the MACHINE gaurding the gate (er box).
