Guitar processors not receiving a signal

I'm running Mandrake 10.1 official with a soundblaster live card. The sound is fine for dvd's and games. I can hear my guitar and change the volume with kmix and some other straight mixer apps but none of the signal processing apps (EfEx, GNUitar, creox, ecamegapedal, etc.) are having any effect. EfEx has an input vu meter and nothing is registering on that. And on a different note, I have a P4 1.8 Ghz, is that going to be enough horses to power a decent JACK home studio with Mandrake, should I deinstall KDE and use a thinner wm?

1.8Ghz is more than enough for a sound recording machine. A thinner WM will only take up less RAM. Window Manager doesn't have a major effect on processing in my experience.
