Guide me to choose right operating system

Hello I am new to linux I am having Dell laptop Inspiron 6000 so I installed RH9 init itis not working, I guess RH9 is old so it may not support, Now I am planning install RH enterprize linux 5, I am a software trainee right now working as a Telecom protocol programmer, some people are going for fedora 8 or 9, can you please guide me in choosing right linux operating system which suites my dell laptop.

You can use CentOS which is a rebuild of RHEL

Fedora only has support for one year, for server operations that is just not enough. RHEL/Centos has a five year support life. IF you want to stick with RH based distros Centos (at least for now) is the way to go.

RHEL charges for updates.
