GUI problem

Hi friends!!

I am a rookie .who just installed CENTOS 5, but i am unable to access my GUI, i landed on to the command prompt and with the help of google was able to install gdm, but now when i try to log in to my id it gives a message " my session has lasted for less than 10 sec' plss help me out

thanks in advance

Instead of using gdm, first type "startx" at the command prompt. This will start the GUI, then you'll be able to set up the configuration to your liking using the menus.

PS Of course, log in before typing startx.

cent is one of the easiest to install
http://www.centos.org/
http://wiki.centos.org/

what is your hardware ? this sounds like your 3d card might be the problem
your specs
how much ram ?
the cpu ?
your 3d card ( if you have one)?
if not the built in chip on your MOBO ( if you have one ) ?
also for a very new user i would recommend installing Ubuntu or mint

cent is targeted for the office and can be a bit hard to get some new things installed

after running startx. my screen flickers and then i get the login prompt for centos. after entering the default username& password i get the message your session lasted for less than 10sec and i am back on the login screen tried to go through the failsafe but didnt work.

Using asrock with dual core 2.8 gig processor and a 4gb ram with 160 gb hdd, during my first install i had a problem with the IP as i donot have a static IP. so added another card and completed the installation with no error. it asked for the login command and after that i was on # prompt then installed the gdm successfully and entered startx/init 5 but still the same problem

sorry forgot to mention...

i am installing VICIDIALNOW which installs centos by itself.

can you help pls..........

John VV 04-29-2010 03:36 PM

so you are building "full Call Center Suite System"
http://vicidialnow.blogspot.com/
and NOT a home system???

so this is going to be a call center and not a home office or desktop install

if call center then YOU DO NOT NEED A GUI.

if a home desktop i would put ubuntu on it

also with a cent based distro you WILL NEED TO USE the pae kernel to be able to use all of that 4 gig of ram
