GUI in X server

I think I spent the last 7 hours reading these threads, but can't find a solution to my problem. I cannot get any GUI to work, I've tried "startx" but get an error that the server is alrady running, I've tried "redhat-config-xfree86" and that allows me to mess with the res and colors, but when I reboot, still a command prompt. This whole Linux thing is new to me, but I want to embrace it as a whole, and learn everything I can.

I know this is a very "Newbie" question, but anything would help.

Look at the x server log for errors /var/log/XF86.log. I don't remember the exact log file name but it will be XF86 something.

try "<ctrl> + <alt> + <F7>"

if that doesn't work
type "pkill X" then try "startx"

hope this helps :-)

If xserver says that it is running, chance is that it's something else. How did you install? Did you specify per chance no graphical login? Normally gdm / kdm / xdm or some such should query you for login ... How do you do that?
