GUI/desktop is TOO BIG for my monitor; How to correct?
 

I have loaded Fedora Core 4 successfully.:D
However the GUI/desktop is at 600x800 and I want it smaller. Websites show up too big and spread outside my monitor. I haven't been successfull in making the desktop and websites show smaller 1280x1024.
My monitor (Proton) doesn't show up on the given hardware config list so I chose generic. I have configured it to 1280X1024 but nothing changes. Can you walk me through a screen configure?
I appreciate your help on this.

this will require the knowledge of your monitor's vertical/horizontal refresh rates

... And can't be done from within X, so you will need to kill it.

Thing is with fedora it will start X again, I always used to kill X repeatedly till it gave up... To kill X hit Ctrl+Alt+Backspace together.

You can run xorgconfig within X, but it has to be restarted in order for the changes to take effect.
Also, when you set up X, the monitor type is of lesser importance - what is important is indicating the graphics card correctly.

well i do not agree with this because if the monitor is not in the database then u need to refer to ur monitor manual for the required horizontal and vertical refresh rates ,so monitor along with the graphics card,both are important.

also please note that right on the desktop there is a tab called "desktop" and in that there is another called system settings which has a thing called display :study:

True, I was being inaccurate. I was just trying to point out that the graphics server using the driver sets the display size.

i think the horizontal and vertical refresh rates also matter for the dsiplay size

They do to an extent, as if they monitor cannot phycally draw the pixels fast enough it can't render the higher resolutions.
