Well as far as more information, I'm currently running fedora 9 and was setting up the firewall via editing the conf. When I go to bring up the firewall gui, after hand editing the conf file, the gui has nothing in it (ie hasnt changed from its last setting), however the firewall is active as that services that were disabled within the conf can no longer get in and out of the network. However if you open the gui and simply click on enable, then disable then save (in the gui interface) - itll erase all my hand edits, updating the firewall as the gui instructed - the services (such as ping) immediatly start working again. From that point on you can edit the firewall through the gui and of course all the edits will appear in the conf file, however if you hand edit anything it won't reflect in the gui - even though you can clearly see that is\isn't working - , the main point of all this being is that: only what youve edited through the gui will show in the gui - nothing that you've hand edited will appear in the gui interfaces. Now thats just my current situation but ive seen this behavior in previous versions with ipchains as well as ipsec, also with all the network-scripts and various other apps. This is why I'm generalizing it to just say that I think this is just how it is and theres nothing you can really do about it. Would I be correct in this?
