Gui

ok, i just installed mandrake LE2005 PPC on an ibook and the install went fine, I installed KDE/GNOME and when the it boots it starts in command prompt, what must i do to load a gui? I would like to load KDE because i'm used to working with it. any help would be greatly appreciated!

kencaz 06-14-2005 01:28 AM

startx will get you into the default GUI (probably KDE)

You can also:
startx /usr/bin/startkde
startx /usr/bin/startgnome

thanks a million, but is there any way i can set it up to load a gui from boot?

kencaz 06-14-2005 01:55 AM

You will have to change your inittab file from a root console it's probably set to 3 you'll want to change it to 5:

Open Konsole from KDE type:

$ su <enter>
PW etc...

# emacs /etc/inittab

--SAMPLE--
# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by Mandrakelinux are:
# 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
# 3 - Full multiuser mode
# 4 - unused
# 5 - X11
# 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
#
id:3:initdefault: <====[Change this to 5]

# System initialization.
si::sysinit:/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit

Save file and reboot

its already set to 5, and it boots to commandprompt

naimslim89 06-14-2005 05:30 AM

Is there an error which causes the Display Manager to not start? Assuming you're using Mandriva, you would be using the Mandrake Display Manager -- is that installed properly? Is there an error in the startup of this Display manager which causes the computer to start in command prompt mode?

azucaro 06-14-2005 08:59 AM

Please post any error messages, and the output of 'dmesg.'

Hopefully this will be just an xorg.conf problem.

PerfectHairForever 06-14-2005 01:44 PM

display manager is installed and gives teh OK at boot
