Unhappy GTK, GLIB + install structures

Am having a bit of confusion over installation procedures....

Using rxvt terminal in blackbox...

I have software to install, first, i needed GTK to run these, then told that glib i have is not recent enough, go to get glib, told need pkg-config, pango, atk....

i now have in my softfolder:
root@localhost soft]# ls
gtk+-1.2.10.tar*
atk-1.2.0/
gtk+-2.2.1/
atk-1.2.0.tar
gzip-1.2.4.tar*
opera-6.01-20020523.1-static-qt.i386/
opera-6.01-20020523.1-static-qt.i386.tar*
pango-1.2.0/
glib-2.2.0/
pango-1.2.0.tar
glib-2.2.0.tar
pkgconfig-0.15.0/
pkgconfig-0.15.0.tar
gtk%2B-2.2.1.tar
gtk+-1.2.10/

i have installed pkgconfig using :
./configure
make
make install

yet, all other dependant programs say something similar to this:
*** The pkg-config script could not be found. Make sure it is
*** in your path, or set the PKG_CONFIG environment variable
*** to the full path to pkg-config.
*** The pkg-config script could not be found. Make sure it is
*** in your path, or set the PKG_CONFIG environment variable
*** to the full path to pkg-config.

I dont know how to do this.....

first glib needs to be installed

Threre are now two (or maybe more?) versions that seems to be not interoperable v2.x and v.1.2.x -- these two could be installed on the same machine at the same time... So make sure that if some programs support 1.2 has 1.2 isntalled...

I have 2.0 by default and now struggling through gtk1.2 (glib1.2-10 installed).

Hope that is of some help
Tomas
