grub problem, can not boot suddenly

Hi, guys,

I installed Redhat 7.3 and Win XP on my laptop 3 months ago, and it works quite well until last week. Suddenly the Gui of the Grub didn't show as before. Instead the bash-like interface is there. And I don't know how to deal with it. I try to the following

rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1
boot

then the XP can be started up, but I don't know how to start up the Linux

how can I do something to make everything work like before?

Any Idea to it?

Thanks in advance!

Did you add any new partitions? It might be possible that the partition number of /boot had changed so grub can no longer read from it.

In this case try

root (hd0, 4) if your new /boot is in /dev/hda5
setup (hd0, 4)

I don't do anything, except I format my new USB harddisk in Win XP. and then when I reset the computer, gui is gone.

I will try what you say,

thanks and regards

I did so and succeccfully starting booting the linux, But some error message like " can not find exfs?? on ide0(3,11)" shows. I can not get any idea about these and decided to quit.

And then I just followed the dummy's way: I re-install linux without formatting any of the disks and then everything works well again.

thanks for reply!
