Unhappy Grub problem

Everytime I turn the computer on, it starts but then Grub doesn't work. This is the message I get:

GRUB version 0.92 (639k lower / 125888k upper memory)

[Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename.]

What should I do? insert a boot diskette?, enter some command?

ps. before this problem, I was trying to edit /boot/grub/grub.conf to add a password but I did not know how. Is it with the cat or cd command that you can edit this file?

thanks a lot for your time.

You didn't mention your distribution, so I don't know what editors you have available. Common editors:
mc (midnight commander, navigate to file, press F4)

# I hosed my box
Multiboot with LILO HOWTO
LILO, Linux Crash Rescue HOW-TO
Installing a bootloader
Multiboot with GRUB Mini-HOWTO
Linux+Win9x+Grub HOWTO
Linux Bootable Business Card

Windows 2000 Recovery Console
Windows XP Recovery Console

grub problem

I forgot to mention that I have Red Hat linux 8.0 (psyche). It is the official (boxed version). I still have the same problem and I don't find the solution.

thanks for your time.

You should post your /etc/grub/grub.conf file so we can take a look at it.
