GRUB fails

Using CD/DVD trying to install openSUSE-12.3-DVD-i586 on older 486 computer

Windows XP still starts OK, then GRUB fails.

Suspect this follows an earlier attempt with zypper dup which froze and failed.

Tried to re-install openSUSE-11.0 which failed with apparent GRUB problem.

Attempt to install openSUSE-12.3-DVD-i586 fails also with apparent GRUB problem.

At selection screen thee install proces, or just start, fails, with green background screen, where small terminal screen (after several attempts to stop to copy) displays results :

After press key to resume, the screen changes to full terminal style display one word

look closely at what you wrote: You're going to install an OS compiled for 586+ CPUs on a 486. That won't work, since good old 486 doesn't support the additional features of the Pentium-class CPUs, which this edition of the OS apparently uses.

In that order? Strange. How would GRUB be invoked after Windows started?

For a PC that old, you'll have to look for a Linux distro that still supports the 386 architecture.

Tell us exactly your CPU model and RAM size, and that will tell us if the hardware is the problem.

Seen on machine: P4S533-E , 512

Asus P4 Series P4S533-E is Pentium 4 with 1.80 GHz CPU and 512 MB RAM
(Pentium 4) P4-1.8 GHz (Socket478, 400 FSB, L2 cache:256KB)
Will NOT Boot from USB

NOTE believe problem self-caused, without thinking {:-O self deleted partition after failed installation, not realizing GRUB probably installed whilst still in MS-W XP mode.

Selected MS-W then pop-up asked to confirm delete/uninstall of GRUB (GRUB4DOS ?) which did, appears done now.

Need some DVD's then try again :-)

on the almost ancient XP
there is zero need for "grun4dos"
the xp text file "boot.ini" will happily boot into grub
use any of the win98 and xp dual boot guides to set up xp's boot.ini
and any of the 5 to 12 year old "dual boot xp and Linux" guides
and fallow the "dd" method and make a "linux.bin" file of the grub /boot partition
but ignore the
-- use the 3.5 in floppy drive ---
part of the instructions

all modern linux systems can read and write to the windows NTFS drive format

CentOS 6.4 has a i386 build
http://mirrors.arsc.edu/centos/6.4/isos/i386/
that should run , but will like more than 512 meg of ram
cent 5.9 will run fine with 512 meg ram
http://mirrors.arsc.edu/centos/5.9/isos/i386/

The Pentium 4 is fine: similar to the AMD Sempron on this computer. But the 512MB of RAM is the problem: SUSE won't like that at all! I'm currently running CentOS with Opera and OpenOffice, and that's taking 537MB.

Your best bets are Exe Linux or Vector
