Grub "error 17" after MDK 10 install

I've installed MDK 10 community over the top of a botched semi install of gentoo.

It all went smoothly until reboot time when all I get at boot is:
GRUB Loading stage1.5.

GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 17

and thats it..........
Does anyone know what "error 17" is???

There are two hd drives in this machine (master and slave on the primary IDE channel) and one CDrom (master on the secondary IDE channel)

I've also tried re-booting off the cdrom and doing a "rescue" and choosing "re-install boot loader"..

It doesn't seem to make any difference...

Thanks for any help..

17 : Cannot mount selected partition
This error is returned if the partition requested exists, but the filesystem type cannot be recognized by GRUB
