GRUB Error 15, Linux already loaded
 

Hello, thanks in advance, I have Slackware installed and ready to run (KDE I think), but am stymied by GRUB Error 15 when I start my computer. I think this is because of an aborted attempt to install Gentoo or Ubunto, whichever. A detailed explanation of what I need to do to get GRUB corrected at this point would be great. I already have ftp-downloaded all the relevant (I hope) GRUB files onto CD-ROM. My computer does not have a floppy drive.

Question: should this be better plastered at "Slackware" or is it just too stupid to begin with? The Gentoo documentation stymies me. I get different error output than they do, just to begin with. (I think it was my try at Gentoo in the first place that was my doing-in.) I didn't know how to mount my drives at the time (and really still don't) (I'm hoping for auto-mount (?) so I aborted my install, and then installed Slackware 12.0, having done so before, choosing the option of having them partition the drive. I was not given a Lilo or GRUB option during the install, which went smoothly. My error output is as follows:
GRUB Loading stage 1.5
GRUB loading, please wait.......
Error 15

It looks to me that error 15 is file not found. Does that fit in with what you are getting?

Start by posting you menu.lst if you can.

Try booting a live CD if you have one (or download one if you don't)

Mount the partition that has you boot partition on it so you can see menu.lst (it will probably be in /boot/grub

I assume that your trying to get you slackware booting again, so you need to make sure that grub is pointing to the correct location.

Do you know what partition slackware is on?

When you get error 15, does grub give the option to edit?

Shouldn't be too hard to fix

Thank you for the relevant advice. I hate to admit it but I'm all too frustrated by things like not knowing how to mount devices or where to find menu.lst (when my computer won't even boot), so after much reading on the esoterics of partitioning and etc. I have broken down and bought a copy of Windows XP. I'm not ready to navigate Linux fixes yet. My apologies. Thanks for your help though.
