Be very careful of typo's
Why are you saying "root (hd1,1)"? The way I read it, his FC5 is on hd0, partition 6 (in grub-speak) AKA /dev/hda7

And yes, the filenames in menu.lst must match what is actually in /boot for the thing you are trying to boot.

It's working now.

The corrected info for the Suse menu.lst entry on drive B is:

title Fedora Core (2.6.15-1.2054_FC5)
root (hd0,6)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.15-1.2054_FC5 ro root=/dev/VolGroup01/LogVol00 rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.15-1.2054_FC5.img
---------------

This is the exact info from the grub.conf file from the original FC5 install on drive A
