grub 'Error2: Bad file or directory type'
Hi
Just arrived, new member, first post. I have just installed mephis7.0 hoping to run it dual boot with fedora9. I did understand that I might need to modify /boot/grub/menu.lst I have tried but keep getting the error message 'Error2: Bad file or directory type' Unfortunately when I installed fedora, raid was enabled (left over from xp that was removed prior to linux) so this perhaps has something to do with the problem. I guess I cannot disable raid without loosing fedora? Also looking at the partitions with gparted it tells me that /dev/sda1 has a fat16 filesystem and shows the error message 'invalid disk format in the boot sector'. This was fat16 when fedora was installed and presented no problem. So if there is a way round this without a complete re-install of both systems please let me know. percy |
Most common current Linux file system is now ext2 or ext3, I would not use the FAT16 except for a USB flash drive Linux install. Can you now boot into either your Mepis or the Fedora with grub at all? Your live install CD may have a option to Repair current installation.

Thanks for that.
Yes I can get into mephis through grub in the normal way and fedora using 'super grub disk' I just wanted to know if I would have to carry out a complete re-install of both systems if I wanted to remove raid and change the boot sector file system type from fat16. percy |
