Group members and rights

I just installed Fedora Core 1, the drivers for my nForce2 based NIC, and Firefox. After completing the above installs, when I log in as a user I get kicked back to the login screen after about 30 seconds. However, if I log in as root I don't seem to have any problems. I saw another post where someone couldn't get Firefox to run as a user at all and someone suggested to check permissions and what group the user is in. Could this be my problems? Could someone point me to a good source of information about permissions in Linux and users and groups?

Thanks,
Chris
